eyond the Runway: Why Sustainable Fashion Takes Center Stage at SMC’s LA Mode 2025

The fashion industry, for all its glamour, has a significant environmental footprint. From resource-intensive production to mountains of textile waste, the impact is undeniable. But what if fashion could be a force for good? What if creativity and style could go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility? This is the vital conversation at the heart of sustainable fashion, and it’s a message that Santa Monica College (SMC) is championing with its upcoming LA Mode 2025.

On June 20th at 7 p.m., the Core Performance Center Courtyard on the SMC Main Campus will transform into a vibrant showcase of the future of fashion. SMC’s Fashion Program is hosting its annual student fashion show, LA Mode 2025, and this year’s theme, “Style, Substance & Sustainability,” couldn’t be more relevant.

This isn’t just about showcasing the latest trends; it’s about celebrating innovation that prioritizes our planet. We’ll witness 25 diverse student-designed collections, ranging from everyday wear to cutting-edge avant-garde pieces, all infused with a conscious approach to design and production. This emphasis on sustainability is crucial. It encourages young designers to think about the lifecycle of their garments, the materials they use, and the ethical implications of their creative choices.

The importance of sustainable fashion cannot be overstated. It’s about:

  • Reducing Waste: Moving away from fast fashion’s disposable model towards durable, timeless pieces that can be cherished for years.
  • Minimizing Environmental Impact: Opting for eco-friendly materials, reducing water and energy consumption in manufacturing, and lowering chemical pollution.
  • Ethical Production: Ensuring fair labor practices and safe working conditions for everyone involved in the supply chain.
  • Innovation: Inspiring designers to find creative solutions for reducing their footprint, from upcycling to utilizing new sustainable technologies.

LA Mode 2025 offers a unique opportunity to connect with this burgeoning movement. Starting at 4 p.m. with the Mocha Carpet, attendees can enjoy sponsor giveaways and network with fashion industry professionals, SMC alumni, and students. This is a chance to engage directly with those at the forefront of change within the industry.

A panel of esteemed industry judges, including leading designers and stylists, will evaluate the student collections not only for marketability, creativity, and technical achievement, but also for their commitment to sustainability. This inclusion highlights how vital these principles are becoming in the professional fashion world. Awards will be announced live, recognizing the talent and conscious efforts of these emerging designers.

Behind the scenes, the show is a collaborative effort, meticulously produced by SMC fashion professors La Tanya Louis, Lorrie Ivas, and Wynn Armstrong, with invaluable contributions from photography, media, and cosmetology students. Generously sponsored by Jeff Abrams of Rails, the event also proudly supports the next generation of talent by awarding 20 fashion scholarships. Furthermore, acclaimed designer Kevan Hall will be honored with the Style and Substance Award, acknowledging his contributions to the industry with a mindful approach.

By attending LA Mode 2025, you’re not just supporting student creativity; you’re investing in a more sustainable future for fashion. Join us in celebrating the power of “Style, Substance & Sustainability” and witness how Santa Monica College is shaping the next wave of conscious fashion innovators.

Admission is $25, or $20 for college students with ID. Don’t miss this inspiring event!
