Now it is necessary to admit that using the traditional water-consuming toilet is quite expensive due to the amount of water used by it on a daily basis. There is an opinion that changing the whole toilet unit will be the way to save water. However, changing the traditional toilet to the dual flush toilet is quite easy and convenient. It is wonderful to save money on your water bills without calling a plumber.
There are lots of kits on the market now, and the majority of them is of the good quality. For example, the Fluidmaster 8300 Convertible is a good kit for any tank configuration. There is another good kit called Danco HydroRight that can be bought in Home Depot. The both kits replace the flapper with a tower and provide a new handle with two buttons.
At first, you should have pliers and a sponge with you. The water supply valve under the tank should be turned off before beginning the work. It is necessary to flush the toilet and siphon out the water from the tank with a help of a sponge. In other case the floor will be wet.
The old flapper should be removed from its place; it is also necessary to disconnect the chain from the handle lever. Generally, the kit provides a special adapter that should be installed on the flush valve. It is necessary to measure the diameter of the hole, as there are two sizes: two inches and three inches. In the majority of cases, the first size will be better.
Installation of the tower is not difficult, and the adjustment of the water level requires some time. It is necessary to install the tower to the adapter following the instructions. Then close the lid and adjust the float height to make the water stop at the level about one inch below the top of the overflow tube. If the water is flowing all the time, it means that you should twist the float one notch down.
Now it is the time for the real miracle of the new handle. The small button makes a light flush for liquid waste, while the large button makes a full flush for the solid waste. Of course, it may seem weird for a retired person to use such handle, but soon you will get used to it.
In some cases, small leaks may appear if the rubber seal does not lie well on the valve seat. Try to move the tower a little to fit it. If the handle is hard to operate, it is possible to loosen the mounting nut a quarter turn.
Imagine how many gallons of water you will be able to save annually. It will result in reduction of the utility bills for each month. It is quite fast and effective project that will pay off within a few weeks.
What is really nice, you did not have to remove the whole toilet unit. You just installed the new mechanism and kept the bowl. Your grandchildren will admire your professional skills!
